The First Wives Club
After seeing the movie when it came out, I was sort of interested in reading the book. Sometimes, a movie adaptation really robs a book of the depth of characterization that makes it really interesting to me. Since the characters in the movie were so two-dimensional, I thought there might be more to the book.
But I never pursued it (it was not high on the list). I just happened across a cheap paperback copy a few weeks ago and picked it up because it was cheap enough to be worth the risk (50 cents is a pretty safe bet for a book; if you hate hate hate it you can get rid of it with no qualms). Two days later, Olivia Goldsmith died during plastic surgery. It was a bit eery.
Anyway, I'm here to report that there actually is not a whole lot more character development in the book. Sure, more things happen to the characters, but they're still characters rather than people. I'm enjoying the book, but it's definitely light reading. I doubt I'll re-read it, so I'm not going to seek it out in a hardcover copy, and I don't think I'll be looking up any of the author's other books.
