Nobrow : The Culture of Marketing, the Marketing of Culture
I don't know when I last read a book that was as boring as this. If you want an autobiography of John Seabrook, this is a good place to look. But if you want an in-depth analysis of marketing and culture, I'm halfway through the book and it hasn't happened yet.
No statistics, no studies, just Mr. Seabrook doing freelance and then staff writing gigs at various magazines, and talking intermittently about culture and highbrow versus lowbrow. You'd think a thesis statement might have appeared somewhere in the first chapter, but no way. I was hoping this would be a swift read, but I find myself falling asleep at yet another discussion of some publishing incident (how witty! how charming! how irrelevant!) and progress has been slow.
Definitely not recommended for anybody.
